The Glacier Express is often known as the 'Orient Express of the Alps' and is also renowned for being the slowest express train in Europe. Travelling along the narrow-gauge railway, idyllic vistas unfold as you wind through striking ravines and snow-covered peaks. Travelling towards Zermatt, which is situated near the foot of the Matterhorn, you will enjoy a wonderful tour through Switzerland's most beautiful landscapes. We leave St Pancras International on a Eurostar for Paris. On arrival in the French capital we change trains and travel via Lausanne to Lucerne, for a four night stay at the 4* Seehotel Pilatus in the delightful village of Hergiswil, located on the shores of the lake. (D)
Why not discover the sights of Lucerne today. A delightful city thanks to its attractive lakeside setting, beautiful historic buildings and variety of shops, Lucerne is a pleasure to explore. Why not visit the Chapel Bridge, the oldest preserved wooden bridge in Europe, the famous Lion Monument or the Swiss Museum of Transport? (B)
Relax in the glorious surroundings of Lake Lucerne or you may wish to use your Treyn Tailor-Made Swiss Card for a 50% reduction on fares on public transport to venture further afield and discover picturesque towns and historic cities. (B)
Today we embark on a leisurely cruise across Lake Lucerne bound for Vitznau. Here we join the Mount Rigi Railway, Europe's first cog railway, as it climbs to the top of Rigi Kulm. On a clear day it is possible to see 13 of Switzerland's lakes, and as far as France and Germany. From Rigi Kulm we descend the opposite side of the mountain by cog railway to Arth Goldau, to join our train for our journey past pretty Lake Zugersee and back to Lucerne. (B,D)
We embark on a morning departure and make our way via Thalwil to Chur to board the world-famous Glacier Express - affectionately known as the slowest 'express' in the world. The journey traverses richly varied landscapes, from snow-capped mountains to peaceful meadows and dramatic passes. From Chur, it makes its way along the broad valley before it climbs towards the Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the route at 6,670 feet (2,033m). It then descends to Andermatt and continues down the Rhône Valley to Brig, a small historic town situated at the foot of the Simplon Pass. Here we check into our base for the next two nights, the 3* Hotel Ambassador. (B,D)
Enjoy the dramatic Swiss scenery today as we travel to the picturesque resort of Zermatt by mountain railway. Overlooked by the mighty Matterhorn, Zermatt is ideally situated for walks into the mountains or, if you have a head for heights, perhaps make the train journey up to the Gornergrat. (B)
